Assessment 1: Learner Response

1) Type up your feedback in full (you don't need to write the mark and grade if you want to keep this confidential).

WWW - This is a strong first assessment with clear potential to push on to the very top grades we're aiming for. There's clearly an excellent understanding of media texts and culture so the challenge is simply familiarizing yourself with the media style of questioning and mark schemes.

EBI - Add genre theory for Q3: Neale or Abercrombie would have been ideal to push into the top level.
Q1 could have brought in additional narrative theories/codes.

2) Read the mark scheme for this assessment carefully. Identify at least one potential point that you missed out on for each question in the assessment.

Q1 - Propp's character types as shown in the film poster
Q2 - Dominant ideology (Nike poster reflects dominant British values and ideologies concerning the importance of hard work, the possibility of social mobility and rising to the top.)
Q3 - Neale's genre theory of repetition and difference

3) Read this exemplar response from a previous Year 12 (an A grade) - note this was a slightly different paper in terms of the question wording and also had an additional question 4 (we've updated it to better reflect recent exams). Identify at least one potential point for questions 1-3 from this student's paper that you could have mentioned in your assessment.

Q1 - Todorov's equilibrium theory
Q2 - Ethnicity of the protagonists in both media products
Q3 - Abercrombie quote

4) Did you get any media terminology or theory wrong in the assessment? Make a note of it here for future revision, including theories/terminology that you could have used but didn't.

I could have used:
- Todorov's equilibrium theory
- Propp's character types
- Neale's genre theory
- Abercrombie

5) Identify your weakest question and write three bullet points that would improve on your original response. Use the mark scheme and exemplar paper to identify these points - particularly focusing on the anticipated content and the top level descriptors.

- Using more media theories in my answer (Todorov and Propp)
- Using more examples of narrative theory from the media products
- Using more media terminology
